Opening night of “Michigan Madness” lives up to name
Indiana’s high school basketball tournament is called “Hoosier Hysteria”. In Michigan, it’s “Michigan Madness”, and opening night on Monday lived up to the moniker.
In Dowagiac, Conor Solarek banked in the game-winning shot at the buzzer of double overtime, as Edwardsburg eliminated Niles, 59-58. The Eddies move on to Wednesday’s semifinals, facing Berrien Springs at 5:30 p.m.
In the nightcap at Dowagiac, Karmine Brown drilled 7 3’s and scored 27 points as Buchanan knocked out Dowagiac, 48-28. The Bucks roll into a semifinal clash with top-seed Benton Harbor on Wednesday night.
There was also drama in Kalamazoo, as longtime rivals St. Joseph and Lakeshore went into overtime before the Bears prevailed, 52-47. Cole Caplea’s steal and layin midway through the extra session gave St. Joe the lead for good. Caplea scored 20 to lead St. Joseph into Wednesay’s semifinal with Kalamazoo Central.
