(Clemson, S.C.) — A signature night for Notre Dame star Markus Burton wasn’t enough to carry Notre Dame to a road win Wednesday night.
The Penn High School alum scored 30 points and passed the 1000-point mark for his Notre Dame career, but the Irish could not stop #13 Clemson, as the Tigers prevailed 83-68, at Littlejohn Coliseum.
Burton became the 7th fastest player in Irish history to reach 1000 points, hitting the mark on a layup late in the first half. But with starters Matt Allocco and Braeden Shrewsberry out, the Irish didn’t have nearly enough weapons to keep up with one of the best teams in Atlantic Coast Conference.
Notre Dame led briefly in the first half, as St. Joseph alum J.R. Konieczny scored off a feed from Burton to give the Irish a 23-22 advantage. The Irish stayed close for most of the first half until Clemson closed with a 7-0 run to grab a 41-31 advantage at halftime.
The Tigers’ Ian Schieffelin controlled the game for most of the second half, as the big man commanded the paint with 24 points and nine rebounds. He had plenty of help from 6-11 Russian Viktor Lakhin, who racked 18 points, five rebounds and five assists.
Burton, who was 12-of-13 at the foul line, hit a pair of free throws to bring the Irish within nine at 62-53 with 8:41 left. Lakhin and Jake Heidbreder scored the next eight points for Clemson, though, and the Irish never threatened after that.
Notre Dame announced before the game that Braeden Shrewsberry would miss the rest of the season with a lower abdominal strain. The Irish fall to 12-16 overall, 6-11 in ACC play. The road trip continues at Wake Forest Saturday evening.
