Valpo’s Lee wins swim state title; Penn finishes 5th
(Indianapolis) — Valparaiso’s Jonah Lee captured the area’s only individual state championship with a victory in the 100-yard breaststroke Saturday here at the IU Natatorium.
Lee ‘s time of 54.13 seconds put him just ahead of Franklin’s Lucas Ackerman and Penn’s Cole Stevenson, who also eclipsed the 55-second mark.
Carmel swept all replays and captured its 11th consecutive team title, while Penn had the best performance of any area team, finishing in fifth place.
Warsaw junior Ian Parrott finished third in the diving competition, which featured a record-breaking performance by Oak Hill’s Grant Cates. The senior shattered a 24-year old record in the event with a score of 655.95, breaking the old state mark by over 32 points.
Penn’s Nate Temeles recorded the only other top-four finish by an area swimmer, taking fourth place in the 100 freestyle.
