Playoff bound! Cubs make postseason for first time since 2020
(Pittsburgh) — A franchise that has won only one World Championship since 1908 will have that chance in October.
Behind a homer and three RBI from Ian Happ and two RBI off the bench from Justin Tucker, the Chicago Cubs qualified for the National League playoffs today with an 8-4 win over Pittsburgh.
The victory touched off a raucous champagne celebration the Cubs’ clubhouse, as the team celebrated its first playoff appearance since the truncated 2020 season.
“Our goal is not complete yet,” reminded a smiling Cubs manager (and Notre Dame baseball alum) Craig Counsell. “We want to host games at Wrigley. We want to play our first playoff game at Wrigley Field. That’s really important. So we have a lot of work left to do for that, but we’re going to have some fun today.”
The Cubs have clinched a wild card with the victory today. Should they maintain the top spot in the wild card, they would host all the games of a best-of-three series, beginning September 30th. Right now, the Cubs’ likely wild-card opponent is San Diego.
Technically, Chicago (88-64) could still win the National League Central. The Cubs trail first-place Milwaukee by 4.5 games with 10 games remaining.
The 88 wins marks a high point for the Cubs since they won 95 in 2018.
