Knox’ McLaughlin breaks state rushing, scoring records
(Knox) — Knox quarterback Myles McLaughlin etched his name into Indiana football history Friday night, becoming the state’s all-time leading rusher and scorer during a 50-35 sectional semifinal win over Griffith.
McLaughlin rushed 54 times for 408 yards and six touchdowns in the win. That gives him a career total of 11,004 yards, shattering the previous mark of 10,867 yards set by New Palestine’s Charlie Spegal in 2019. McLaughlin is only the fifth back in high school history to eclipse the 11,000-yard mark in his career.
McLaughlin broke the mark on a 21-yard run to the right in the third quarter, breaking four tackles along the way and sending the crowd at Knox’ Community Field into a frenzy.
With the six touchdowns, McLaughlin also broke Spegal’s state scoring record of 1054 career points. McLaughlin now has 1090 in his career.
Most importantly, the win propels the unbeaten Redskins into next Friday’s sectional championship game. Knox will play host to Marian, with kickoff slated for 7:30 pm EST.
