Marian wins state title in girls soccer to highlight busy Saturday of HS Sports

Marian has won a state championship in girls soccer for the first time since 2012 to highlight a busy Saturday of high school action in Indiana with Sports Michiana teams taking part in the girls soccer state finals, girls and boys cross country state finals and volleyball semistate.

Marian wins 2A Girls Soccer State Championship

Milana Micola scored two goals and the Marian girls soccer team won its first state championship since 2012 with a 3-0 win over Park Tudor in the 2A State Finals in Indianapolis Saturday.

It is the 2nd state championship for Marian in girls soccer but their first in Class 2A.

Micola gave Marian a 1-0 lead 10 minutes into the game and then scored her 2nd goal with 3:20 left in the 1st half to put the Knights up 2-0 at halftime. Aubrey Bradley added a 2nd half goal to seal the win.

Marian reached the state finals a year ago but lost in the championship game. The Knights finished 15-4-2 on the season.

Bremen falls in 1A Girls Soccer State Championship

A dream season for the Bremen girls soccer team came to end Saturday with a 3-0 loss to Heritage Christian in the 1A State Championship game.

Bremen was making school history simply making it to the state finals. Prior to this season, the Lions had never won a sectional championship in girls soccer let alone make it all the way to the state finals.

Bremen’s Isabella Calentine was named the Mental Attitude Award Winner.

Westview’s Bontrager Finishes Runner-Up in Boys Cross Country State Finals

Westview senior Noah Bontrager went into an all out sprint in the final 50 meters but came up a hair short of capturing a boys cross country state championship.

The Notre Dame bound runner who has won multiple state titles in track and field forced a photo finish but it was Calvin Seitz of Spring Valley being declared the state champion. Both runners finished with incredible times of 15 minutes and 1.3 seconds.

Warsaw’s Jackson Gackenheimer was 7th and Northridge’s Baylor Miller was 11th.

Northridge finished 5th as a team.

Penn finishes 5th in Girls Cross Country State Finals

Thanks to two top 11 finishes, Penn finished 5th in the team competition at the Girls Cross Country State Finals.

Junior Lila Van Hoveln finished 8th and sophomore Shreya Nayee was 11th in the individual competition.

Area volleyball season ends at semistate

NorthWood was the sole area survivor in the volleyball semistate after the early round.

4A: Crown Point beats Penn, 3-1
3A: NorthWood downs Marian, 3-2
2A: South Adams tops Lakeland, 3-0
1A: Rossville sweeps Triton, 3-0

The Panthers then fell to Bishop Dwenger, 3-1, in the 3A semistate championship at Huntington Saturday night.
