Indiana #2, Notre Dame #10 in 1st CFP Rankings

If the College Football Playoff started today, Indiana would be seeded #2 and have a 1st round bye.

And they’d face either #7 BYU or #10 Notre Dame in the quarterfinals. The Irish made the cut when the initial College Football Rankings were released on Tuesday night and would open on the road at the undefeated Cougars.

The 1st round byes would go to #1 Ohio State, #2 Indiana, #3 Texas A&M and #4 Alabama. Virginia would be seeded 11th as the highest ranked ACC team and Memphis, not in the top 25, would fill the 12th and final spot to represent the Group of 5.

Notre Dame is riding a six game winning streak and sits at 6-2 on the season after opening the season with losses to now #18 Miami and #3 Texas A&M. Notre Dame’s best win so far is against arch rival USC, which came in at #19 in the initial CFP rankings. Notre Dame has one top 25 opponent left in its remaining four regular season games when the Irish travel to #24 Pitt on November 15th.

On Monday, Marcus Freeman was asked if where the Irish land in the CFP rankings could be used as motivation for his team.

“I’m gonna use Saturday’s opportunity to motivate us–that’s what matters,” Freeman declared. “Me using [the CFP Rankings] is, I believe, wasted time. I do. I do. If I sit in my office and try to come up with some way to utilize our ranking to use it as motivation, I’m wasting time that I need to be really using to prepare for this upcoming game on Saturday.”

Notre Dame will host Navy Saturday at the Stadium. The Midshipmen are 7-1 and coming off their first loss of the season to North Texas.

“And so that’s the motivation, is this opportunity we have on Saturday,” Freeman continued. “And that’s all we need to spend time thinking about. The minute we start thinking about College Football Playoff rankings, you’re just wasting time. It’s a great reminder. It might happen naturally. It’s great reminder when you start doing it. Get back to the moment, get back to work, because that’s what’s important.”

If the playoffs started today…. It would look like this:

#12 Memphis at #5 Georgia (winner to face #4 Alabama)
#9 Oregon at #8 Texas Tech (winner to face #1 Ohio State)
#11 Virginia at #6 Ole Miss (winner to face #3 Texas A&M)
