IU crushes Oregon to advance to the national championship game

Those men are now one win away from completing the most remarkable run in college football history after #1 Indiana crushed Oregon 56-22 in the College Football Playoff Semifinals at the Peach Bowl.
The Hoosiers will face Miami at Miami’s home stadium in the College Football National Championship Game on Monday, January 19th.
“That sounds good–it means we got it done today–now we have to get ready for one more,” 2nd year coach Curt Cignetti told ESPN immediately after the game.
Miami is also home for IU quarterback Fernando Mendoza who dazzled again Friday night, completing 17 of 20 passes for 177 yards and five touchdowns. That’s two more touchdowns than incompletions.
“Playing in any national championship is fantastic but it means a little bit more for me–I used to be able to walk to the University of Miami,” the Heisman Trophy winning Mendoza said after the game. “I used to play rec basketball games there or beach volleyball on the sand courts. It means a lot. I’m really excited for the City of Miami to get the opportunity as well and I just can’t wait to play in Hard Rock Stadium.”
Mendoza was the Peach Bowl Offensive Player of the Game. Elijah Sarratt caught two of those touchdown passes, finishing with 7 catches for 75 yards.
Indiana scored just 11 seconds into the game when D’Angelo Ponds intercepted the Dante Moore pass and returned it for the touchdown. Ponds was the Defensive Player of the Game. Ponds is also a Miami area native.
After Oregon tied the game at 7, Mendoza hit Omar Cooper Jr to put IU up 14-7 after one.
And that’s when things got out of control. The Hoosiers would score all three 2nd quarter touchdowns to take a 35-7 lead into the half and they didn’t let up in the 2nd half.
Cignetti is now 26-2 as the Indiana head coach as the Hoosiers improved to 15-0. Indiana has defied all the odds and all the history and are now one win away from their first national championship in program history.
The Hoosiers have steamrolled both opponents in the playoffs, defeating Alabama 38-3 last week in the Rose Bowl. They will face a Miami team that beat Ohio State in the quarterfinals and Ole Miss in the semifinals.
But Cignetti said he isn’t thinking about the national championship game just yet. He’s thinking about cracking open and enjoying a beer.
