(Goshen) — In the night sky, planets often show up as the biggest and brightest, but it doesn’t mean a constellation of stars goes unnoticed.

That was certainly the case at Foreman Field Tuesday night, where a pair of track and field local legends showed out, but a group of Penn Kingsmen shone bright enough to win the school’s first girls regional track championship since 2010.

First-place finishes from sophomores Shreya Nayee (1600) and Lauren Arevalo (pole vault) were supported by two second- , two third- and two fourth-place finishes as Penn compiled 70 points to take the team crown.

South Bend Adams was 2nd with 63. The Eagles only had one blue ribbon on the night, as the 4 x 100 relay team missed the regional record by one-hundredth of a second.

Individual performances dazzled the crowd in Goshen. Defending state champion Adriana Swanson opened the night by setting a new regional record in the 100-meter high hurdles in 13.85 seconds. The Indiana University commit then won her 8th career regional crown, taking the 300-meter hurdles in 43.72.

Goshen legend Kristin Petkova sparkled as well. The Dartmouth commit set a new regional record with a time of 56.18 in the 400 meters. Then, Petkova teamed with Destony Sanchez, Lainey Trenshaw and 200-meter champion Amari Lind to set a new regional mark in the 4 x 400 relay, circling the track in a blistering 3:51.35.  The Red Hawks finished nine seconds ahead of their nearest opponent, posting the second-fastest time in the event in the state this season.

The top three in each event are guaranteed spots in the state finals to be held Friday, June 5, at North Central High School in Indianapolis.
