Baseball sectional champs crowned
Diamonds yielded plaques Monday night, as IHSAA baseball sectional champions were crowned around the Sports Michiana coverage area.
In Class 4A, Penn won its 26th sectional crown with a 9-3 triumph over Mishawaka at Ward Baker Park. Bennett Hartford drove in three for the 24-6 Kingsmen, who advance to face Valparaiso in the regional. Locationas for Saturday’s regional games will be determined by the IHSAA Tuesday.
Make it back-to-back sectional championships for the first time since 1999-2000, as the Red Hawks blanked Concord, 10-0. Ace Ryen Diaz scattered five hits for Goshen, while Jensen Meikle starred at the plate with three knocks.
In Class 3A, winners kept winning. New Prairie claimed its fourth straight sectional crown with a 12-2 drilling of Culver Academies. Cameron Greene drove in three to lead the Cougar onslaught. New Prairie faces perennial power Andrean in the regional.
Also in 3A, NorthWood captures its third straight championship with a 6-2 triumph over Fairfield. The Falcons loaded the bases with no one out off winning pitcher Drew Rains in the 7th, but Ean Bogan came on to collect the save. NorthWood draws Highland in the regional and will likely play on its home field Saturday.
In 2A, Bremen won its 20th game of the season and first sectional since 2023 with a 3-1 victory at Jimtown. JJ Cencelewski tossed a complete game to get the Lions onto the regional for a date with Bluffton.
Also in 2A, Lakeland advances, thanks to an 11-5 win over Central Noble. Levi Cook collected four RBI for the Lakers, who face Hebron next.
The biggest upset happened in Class 1A, where South Central upended 3rd-ranked Triton, 4-2. Colton Elkins fired a four-hitter for the Satellites, moving them on to a regional showdown with #1 Kouts, which beat Michigan City Marquette, 7-2.
Also in 1A, Caston used a walk-off sacrifice fly from London Herd to beat West Central, 6-5. Next up for the Comets will be Fort Wayne Blackhawk Christian.
