WR Quincy Porter had a “minor procedure” today, according to Freeman, hoping to speed along his recovery. Freeman says Porter is still a couple weeks out from practicing. In Porter’s absence, Micah Gilbert, Elijah Burress, Jerome Bettis Jr. and Devin Fitzgerald have made plays at the boundary receiver position in camp. Freeman cites Matt Jeffery as perhaps Notre Dame’s most consistent WR. Says coaches are still trying to decide on 5th and 6th receivers.

Regarding OL: Looking for the combo that gives the best five on the line. Center/guard Ashton Craig isn’t fully cleared to play in games yet, but has looked good in practice. The staff will evaluate scrimmage today and look at Craig, Joe Otting and Sullivan Absher for center and guard slots.

On Leonard Moore: “There’s a lot of ways to challenge Leonard and he wants that. Great players don’t want to be left alone. It’s our job to continue to find ways to make him better.”

On tight ends: “When I think of alpha, I think of “Coop” (Cooper Flanagan). He’ll be the number one, but the room is deep. You’ll see a heavy dose of Coop and then James (Flanigan)

There is no decision yet on who will be the second-string quarterback for the Wisconsin game.  “I’d like to say we’ll watch the tape and go make a decision, but I don’t know that we’ll be ready to do that today.”

Freeman says the running back order is Aneyas Williams, Nolan James, Jr and Kedren Young as the top three, but says the two freshmen (Jonaz Walton and Javion Osborne) have been impressive with Osborne making plays in today’s scrimmage.

As you might expect, Freeman is not taking the bait on any national championship talk regarding the Irish. “We have to be more obsessed with execution and less concerned if coach tells me I did a good job. I want them obsessed with execution on this play and not Instagram likes. We’ve got to be aware of the noise we allow into our head. If we’re too obsessed with the ‘good’ noise, then we’re not listening enough to the noise the coaches are putting in their head.”
