The last Friday of August was a busy one on the local high school gridirons.

Sports Michiana featured the “Backyard Brawl” as Penn mauled Mishawaka, 49-7. As impressive as Penn’s offense was, with quarterback Landon Hall throwing for 215 yards, the Kingsmen defense may have been the bigger story, stifling Mishawaka’s option attack.

Northridge 35, Columbia City 34: Jake Scholl hit Keivontre Copeland with a 40-yard touchdown pass with 1:54 left as the Raiders rallied for the victory.
Warsaw 29, Fort Wayne Northrop 28: Michael Schenck rushed for 235 yards as the Tigers edged Northrop. Warsaw is now 2-0.
St. Joseph (MI) 29, Niles 20: The Bears won the 104th chapter of the rivalry between the two schools.
First Wins: New coaches Griffin Heckaman (Goshen), Brent Corbett (Plymouth), Joe Calderone (Marian), Nick File (Buchanan) and Mark Frey (Lakeshore) all picked up their first victories.
