Colts start fire sale; trade Nelson, Buckner

(Indianapolis) — Just seven weeks into the season, the Indianapolis Colts have raised the white flag on 2026.

Tuesday, Indianapolis traded away eight-time Pro Bowl guard Quentin Nelson and three-time Pro Bowl defensive tackle DeForest Buckner.

Nelson went to Seattle for a third-round pick in 2027 and a fifth-round pick in 2028.  Buckner heads to San Francisco, the team that originally drafted him for a 2027 fourth-round selection.

The 30-year-old Nelson, drafted sixth overall out of Notre Dame by the Colts, in 2018, bolsters a struggling Seahawks offensive line. He’s in the final year of a contract that pays him $16 million this season and could be a coveted free agent.

Nelson may wind up having to block Buckner after six years of being teammates. Buckner continually voiced his frustration this year at the Colts losses. He fortifies a 49ers defensive line that may also soon have Nick Bosa returning.

As for the Colts, all eyes now turn to veteran running back Jonathan Taylor, who has logged 587 rushing yards and a league-best eight rushing touchdowns on 140 carries through the first seven weeks of the season. The 27-year-old is on pace for his fourth NFL season with at least 1,500 scrimmage yards and has twice led the NFL in total touchdowns across his seven-year career to date.
