Notre Dame to host Indiana in playoff 1st round; bracket revealed
South Bend will feature the first ever College Football Playoff game on a college campus with an all Indiana battle.
Notre Dame (11-1) will host Indiana (11-1) on Friday, December 20th at 8pm at Notre Dame Stadium. The game will be broadcast on ABC & ESPN.
“It’s exciting,” Marcus Freeman said Sunday. “To say you are a part of the first home playoff game in Notre Dame history is humbling and exciting. You can’t help but notice what a terrific job they’ve done at Indiana this year to go 11-1 in the Big Ten Conference & win some games against some really good opponents, speaks to where that program is. We understand the challenge we have coming up.”
The Irish finished 5th in the final rankings and were seeded 7th. Indiana finished 8th in the final rankings and will be the 10th seed.
Notre Dame and Indiana are meeting for the 30th time, with Notre Dame leading the series 23-5-1 with a 13-1-1 record at Notre Dame Stadium vs the Hoosiers. The last meeting between the two teams came on Sept. 7, 1991, a 49-27 Irish win at Notre Dame Stadium. IU’s only win ever at Notre Dame Stadium came in 1898.
“Great in-state matchup,” IU 1st year coach Curt Cignetti said. “I see 1898 on there. I think we accomplished a lot of things [Indiana hasn’t] accomplished since 1898 this year. [Notre Dame is] a great football team–will be a tremendous challenge.”
In Cignetti’s 1st season as head coach, the Hoosiers have shocked the college football world by making a run to the playoffs with a program that has traditionally been among the lowest performing teams of the power four conferences.
The Indiana-Notre Dame winner will face SEC Champion and #2 Georgia in the quarterfinals in the Sugar Bowl on January 1st at 8:45pm.
Regardless of rankings, the top 4 seeds go to conference champions (Oregon, Georgia, Boise State, Arizona State) while ACC champion Clemson (9-3) also received an automatic birth but is seeded 12th because of being ranked 16th.
