Five area wrestling teams win Saturday tourneys

Five Sports Michiana area wrestling teams took home tournament titles Saturday.
Penn won the prestigious Jim Nicholson Invitational in Elkhart. One of the state’s best 190-pounders, Vinny Freeman, took MVP honors at the event, while teammate Ryann Schmidtendorff collected his 100th career victory.
A resurgent St. Joe wrestling program added to its trophy case with a win at South Bend’s Carl Evans Invitational. Boston Dockery, Garrett Sparke and Julian Smith all won individual crowns for the Huskies.
At John Glenn’s Harry Ganser Invitational, Winamac prevailed over the six-team field. Asher Jones, Tearson Wolford and Talen Garner were weight-class titlists for the Warriors.
Two Michigan teams also grabbed trophies. Edwardsburg took the top spot at White Pigeon’s Jackie Besser Memorial Tournament, while Three Rivers won the Mark Bosse Memorial Tourney in Hart. Sam Reynolds grabbed his 100th career win and led a parade of five Wildcat champions.
