Miles ties record as Irish whip Pitt
(Pittsburgh) — In a city where three rivers flow, the three flowed like a river for Notre Dame’s women’s basketball team.
Olivia Miles tied a school record with eight threes and the second-ranked Irish buried 14 triples as a team on the way to an 88-57 win over Pitt at the Petersen Events Center.
Miles’ proficiency beyond the arc tied the mark set by Rochester alum Sheila McMillen back in 1998. The veteran guard also added seven rebounds and five assists.
She had plenty of help from backcourt mate Sonia Citron, as the senior registered a double-double with 22 points and 10 rebounds. Citron was also a sniper in this one, connecting on 8-of-9 from the field, including 4-5 from beyond the arc.
The Irish needed that, as All-American Hannah Hidalgo had one of her worst shooting nights in an Irish uniform, connecting on just 3-17 from the field. Hidalgo found other ways to contribute, scoring 11 points, with seven steals and five assists.
Pitt came out sizzling, shooting 64 percent in the first quarter to trail only 22-21 heading into the second quarter. That’s when Notre Dame created some space. Miles and Citron combined for 21 points in the quarter, as the Irish took a 49-33 lead into the halftime break.
Hidalgo keyed a 12-0 run early in the third with a seven-point burst to put the game away.
Notre Dame has now won 17 consecutive games and runs its Atlantic Coast Conference mark to 13-0. #13 Duke comes to Purcell Pavilion Monday night for a nationally-televised showdown at 6 p.m. on ESPN.
