The combined hockey team of Riley and Marian High Schools are bringing back the 3A State Championship, after posting a 5-3 win over Evansville in the title game Saturday afternoon.
Mitchell Fimbel put the ‘Cats on the board in the first, but Evansville responded quickly, knotting the game at 1-1 after one.
Five-and-a-half minutes into the second period, Fimbel lit the lamp again to make it 2-1, and teammate Nolan Cline — who led the Michiana High School Hockey League in points — added another tally to make it 3-1.
After Evansville closed the gap to 3-2, Fimbel took over, scoring one more goal in the second and another in the third on his way to a four-goal day.
The title is Riley’s first at the 3A level. They last won the 2A crown in 2019.
Also Saturday, Columbus downed South Bend Adams, 4-2, in the 2A championship game. Wyatt Leichty scored in the second period for Adams, tying the game at 1. With just over five minutes remaining, Tommy Hornback ripped a laser past the Columbus goalie to put the Eagles on top, 2-1. But Columbus rallied with two goals and added an empty-net tally late to account for the final score.
