Jackson wins 600th as Irish icers upset #3 Minnesota
(Minneapolis) — The swan song for Notre Dame hockey coach Jeff Jackson has been off-key most of the year.
Friday night, the Irish hit all the right notes.
Notre Dame upset third-ranked Minnesota, 3-2, to win the opening game of their Big Ten tournament series. The victory marked the 600th of his illustrious career, 418 of them coming at Notre Dame.
The Irish took advantage of two blunders by Gopher goalie Liam Souliere to get the win. In the first period, Souliere mishandled a dump-in lob by Notre Dame’s Axel Kumlin and the puck slid in the net. Then in the second, Brennan Ali picked off a pass from Souliere behind the Gophers net and buried a backhander at 1:18 of the period.
Owen Say made 30 saves between the pipes en route to the win. The junior netminder made a series of key saves in the final minutes of regulation to hold on for the win.
The Irish now lead the best-of-three series, 1-0, with Game Two set for tomorrow night in the Twin Cities.
