St. Joe lone team remaining after record-setting game

During the week, St. Joseph senior Chase Konieczny beamed when he gave a scouting report on Maconaquah.

“They like to run like we do,” smiled Konieczny. “Should be a fun game.”

It was certainly fun for the second-ranked Huskies, who set an IHSAA semistate record for points in a game with a 115-81 victory over the Braves at the Berry Bowl in Logansport.

Konieczny led the way with 25 points, 11 rebounds and 4 steals. His career point total now stands at 2,118, passing the legendary Steve Alford for 50th on the all-time Indiana high school boys basketball scoring list.  Nick Shrewsberry added 22, while Elijah King tallied 20 for Saint Joseph (25-3), which will meet East Chicago Central (21-8) in the Class 3A North semistate final at 8 pm EDT.

Saint Joseph is the lone Sports Michiana area high school team still alive, after three others fell in the Elite Eight today.

In 4A at Elkhart, top-ranked Fishers rolled past Riley, 82-46, winning their 42nd consecutive game. Justin Kirby scored 21 for the defending state champs, who raced to a 20-3 first quarter lead and never looked back. Marvin Schindler closed his brilliant Riley career with 11 points to lead the ‘Cats, now 22-5.

Jimtown lost a heartbreaker to Manchester, falling 56-55 in the 2A North semistate at Michigan City. Ethan Hendrix buried a three with 8.6 seconds remaining to put the Squires ahead for good after a remarkable Jimtown comeback in the fourth quarter.  The shot was set up with a controversial call, where a Manchester player appeared to be out of bounds and in contact with the ball, but possession was given to the Squires.

That doesn’t detract from a terrific game. Hendrix led the Squires with 19, while Branden King scored 14 and Dylan Fey added 12 for Jimtown, whose season ends at 16-11.

Finally, in 1A, #3 Clinton Prairie eliminated Triton, 62-47, at the Lafayette Semistate. Jason Groves’ Triton squad, which lives on three-point shooting, could only connect on 4-of-22 from beyond the arc against the taller Gophers.

Landon Patrick and Dante Workman each scored 12 for Triton, which closes at 23-5.
