Bontrager doubles, Randall leaps to title at state meet
(Indianapolis) — If you watched the boys track regional on Sports Michiana last week, you had a harbinger of what would happen at the state finals.
Westview’s Noah Bontrager won state titles in the 1600 and 3200, while Warsaw’s Jordan Randall took the championship in the high jump to lead a night of solid performances by Michiana boys track and field athletes.
Bontrager, a junior who has committed to run at Notre Dame, set a state record in the 1600 with an electric time of 4:02.6, outrunning rival Baylor Miller of Northridge by five seconds. Miller finished as runner-up, setting his own PR. Elkhart’s Max Malloy came in 7th.
Bontrager then took the crown in the 3200, posting a personal best of 8:51.22 and just missing the state record by .07 seconds. Bontrager wowed the crowd at North Central High School, running the final lap in under a minute to beat Fishers’ Sam Quagliaroli by 3.7 seconds. He’s the first Westview runner to win two state titles since Andrew Begley did it in 1995.
Bontrager was not the only area athlete to garner a blue ribbon. Warsaw high jumper Jordan Randall, cleared 7-feet for the third straight week to take the high jump title. The junior outleaped Chesterton’s Nolan Johnston by an inch, becoming Warsaw’s first boys individual state champion since shot putter Neil Fribley in 1983. West Noble’s Dustin Richardson finished 4th at 6-7.
Randall led a very strong Warsaw showing in the field events. The Tigers had three of the top nine in the discus as James Leiter finished 4th, with Ben Booren 8th and Kam Kauffman 9th. Leiter improved that showing by one spot in the shot put, placing third while his fellow “Wild Hog” Kauffman came in 8th.
The 800-meters was also a strong event for the area, as Elkhart Christian’s Caleb Barnard finished fourth, with Concord’s Jack Yoder 7th and Bremen’s Luke Kincaid 8th. Kincaid was also cited as the IHSAA Mental Attitude Award winner.
In other top five finishes, Penn’s Kellen Watson ran 5th in the 100 meters, while Elkhart’s Alonzo Newbern placed fourth in the 200-meter dash.
As for the team standings, Lawrence North wins the state title. Warsaw finished fifth and Westview, with Bontrager accounting for all the points, tied for 9th.
