Two ND players selected in MLB Draft
(Notre Dame) — Two Notre Dame baseball players were selected in the final day of the Major League Baseball draft.
Pitcher Rory Fox was taken by the New York Yankees in round six, with shortstop Estevan Moreno was a 20th-round pick of the Seattle Mariners.
Fox is 6-3, 200-pound righthander out of Waukesha, Wisconsin, who entered the Irish starting rotation last season. He caught scouts attention with a 96 mph fastball, complemented by a curve, slider and changeup. He went 4–4 with a 3.58 ERA for the Irish, fanning 64 batters in 65.1 IP. Most impressively, opponents batted just .187 against Fox.
Moreno had a solid three-year career with the Irish, collecting 30 homers and 107 RBI for Shawn Stiffler’s squad. Last season, Moreno finished second on the team with 10 homers with 43 RBI. The 6-3, 215-pound junior from Hanover Park, Illinois told Irish Sports Daily’s Matt Freeman he would forego his senior year and join the Mariners’ organization.
This marks the second consecutive season the Irish have had two players selected in the baseball draft. Jack Penney (Round 5, Detroit) and Jack Findlay (Round 8, St. Louis) were both taken in 2024.
