Bubba Wallace wins Brickyard 400

(Indianapolis) — Opened since 1909, it’s hard to do something at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway that hasn’t been done before.

Bubba Wallace found a way Sunday.

Wallace used a risky fuel strategy to hold off Kyle Larson in double overtime and become the first black driver to win at Indianapolis, taking the checkered flag in the Brickyard 400.  It’s his third NASCAR win, the first in his last 100 races, and certainly the most prestigious of his racing career.

“Unbelievable to win here at the Brickyard knowing how big this race is,” Wallace told TNT after the win. “Knowing all the noise that’s been going on in the background. To set that all aside is a testament to these people on the 23 team. It’s been getting old running on the cutline.”

Indeed, the win locks Wallace into the Cup Series playoffs after spending nearly the entire season on the bubble. He was ranked 16th in the playoff standings, 16 points above the cutline, before becoming the 13th winner this season.

The runner-up Larson was gaining on Wallace by about a half-second per lap when  a rain shower caused the red flag to fly, pushing the race past the scheduled distance of 160 laps.

Despite being low on fuel, Wallace held off Larson on the first restart on Lap 162, but the caution flew for a multicar crash. That set up another restart and raised concerns about whether Wallace had the fuel to reach the finish. But Wallace used another great restart to stave off Larson, who won at Indy last year.

Denny Hamlin finished third, followed by Ryan Preece and Brad Keselowski.  Winamac’s Justin Haley finished 11th after starting 28th.
