Cubs, Tigers win wild card series
Thursday proved to be a delightful day on the diamonds for many Michiana baseball fans.
Both the Chicago Cubs and Detroit Tigers posted win in their Major League Baseball Wild Card Series, moving on to the divisional round this weekend.
The Cubs used another strong outing from their bullpen to down San Diego, 3-1, and take the series two games to one. Jameson Taillon and five relievers combined to keep the Padre bats in check, backed by some sparkling defense from the Cubs infield.
Chicago will now face top-seeded Milwaukee in a best-of-five series, beginning Saturday in America’s Dairyland.
Meanwhile, Dillon Dingler’s sixth-inning homer off Cleveland’s Eric Sabrowski broke a 1-1 deadlock, igniting a late Tigers rally that put the Tigers into the ALDS with a 6-3 win at Progressive Field on Thursday.
The victory not only gave the Tigers a 2-1 AL wild-card series win over the rival Guardians , it avenged last year’s loss to Cleveland in the ALDS.
Detroit now heads to the Pacific Northwest to face West division champion Seattle. That’s also a best-of-five set that starts Saturday.
