Certa’s 3 helps Irish men rally past Mizzou, 76-71
(Notre Dame) — Cole Certa came to Notre Dame with the reputation as a big-time sharpshooter.
Tuesday night, he lived up to billing.
Certa hit the game-tying three with 1:35 remaining and then a go-ahead three with 17 seconds left as the Irish rallied past an undefeated Missouri squad, 76-71, at Purcell Pavilion.
The win is certainly the biggest of the season thus far for this Irish squad, now 6-3.
Notre Dame trailed by 12 late in the first half as head coach Micah Shrewsberry drew a technical foul. That seemed to spark his team in the final seconds of the half, as Braeden Shrewsberry drilled a three and Penn High School alum Markus Burton scored on a layup to cut the deficit to 40-33 at halftime.
The Irish then grabbed the lead midway through the second half, going on an 11-0 run, sparked by Burton who finished with 18 points and 10 assists.
Mark Mitchell keyed the Tiger comeback, scoring 26 points, including two free throws with 1:42 remaining that set the stage for Certa’s heroics.
Notre Dame now has a quick turnaround to get ready for a Friday night clash at TCU.
