Luce out at Wawasee; O’Connell takes over
(Syracuse) — In a press release Tuesday morning, Wawasee athletic director Brent Doty announced that as of today, February 3, Joe Luce is no longer serving as the head coach at Wawasee High School.
No reason was given for Luce’s departure.
Luce was in his first year with the program, but his 24th overall at seven different schools. He had recently won his 400th career game while leading the Warriors to a 12-6 record, their highest win total in the last five seasons. The Warriors suffered back-to-back losses over the weekend, falling to Concord and Lakeland.
The release went on to announce that assistant coach Nate O’Connell has accepted the position of Head Boys Basketball Coach.
O’Connell began his coaching career with Wawasee in 2008 and has been a part of the Warriors program for many years. He was on Phil Mishler’s staff in 2010 when Wawasee won its last boys basketball sectional.
In the release, Doty wrote “Coach O’Connell has demonstrated a deep understanding of the game of basketball, a strong commitment to player development, and a genuine care for the young men he coaches.”
Wawasee faces Northridge in a key Northern Lakes Conference contest Thursday night.
