Ivey’s Irish to open NCAA Women’s Tourney vs Fairfield in Columbus

The Notre Dame women’s basketball team is a #6 seed in the upcoming NCAA Tournament and will open up play Saturday against #11 Fairfield in Columbus, Ohio.

Tipoff on Saturday will be at 2pm with the game airing on ESPN. It will follow host and 3rd seeded Ohio State (26-7) taking on #14 Howard (26-7). The winners would meet on Monday.

Columbus has been good to Notre Dame in the past. The last time ND played their, they won the 2018 national championship.

Niele Ivey’s Irish enter March Madness playing their best basketball of the season, winning nine of their last 11 games. They are 22-10 overall and finished 12-6 in the ACC. Fairfield is 28-4 and are the 3-time reigning MAAC Champions. The Stags are the top 3 point shooting team in the country, making 11.4 trifectas per game.

Should Notre Dame advance to the Sweet 16 for the 5th straight season, they’d head to Fort Worth with potential opponents including #2 Vanderbilt (27-4), #7 Illinois (21-11), #10 Colorado (22-11) and #15 High Point (27-5). The Sweet 16 game would take place on Friday March 27th with the Elite 8 occurring on March 29th. UConn is the #1 seed in the bracket.

The only all time meeting between Notre Dame and Fairfield came back on December 28, 1987 with Notre Dame winning 75-62 in a game played in Villanova, PA during Muffet McGraw’s 1st season as the Irish head coach.
