Former Penn, ND hoops star Markus Burton heads to IU
(Bloomington) — Fans of former Penn and Notre Dame basketball star Markus Burton wondered where he would exit the transfer portal.
They didn’t have to look that far away.
With a post on his Instagram page Monday afternoon, Burton announced he has committed to play next season at Indiana University. Heis expected to be the starting point guard for the Hoosiers, and may be the best player Indiana has had at that position since Yogi Ferrell (2012-2016).
In 2024, Burton was the ACC Rookie of the Year, then followed that in his sophomore campaign by leading the league in scoring with 21.3 points per game. Last season, Burton played well in the first ten games of the year, before breaking his ankle in a game against TCU on December 5th. He did not play the rest of the season, and will likely get a medical redshirt, leaving him with two years of eligibility.
Burton had visited Houston over the weekend, before going to Bloomington Sunday afternoon.
According to longtime IU basketball writer Jeff Rabjohns, Burton’s ability to break down defenders with the dribble, get into the paint and create scoring opportunities for teammates or himself is something Indiana has lacked in recent years.
Burton is one of three former ACC guards who committed to the Hoosiers Monday. He’s joined by Duke’s Darren Harris and Georgia Tech’s Jaeden Mustaf.
