It was one of the most blockbuster nights for the Michiana area ever at the IHSAA Boys Track and Field State Finals as Michiana came away with FOUR individual state titles.

Westview senior Noah Bontrager repeated as state champion in both the 1600m and 3200m Runs. The Notre Dame bound distance runner broke his own state record in the 1600m Run with a winning time of 4 minutes and 1.83 seconds. In the final race of his high school career, Bontrager shattered the state record in the 3200m run when he won it in 8 minutes and 47.57 seconds. The previous record of 8 minutes and 51.15 seconds stood for 14 years. Bontrager is the 1st Westview boys track athlete since Andrew Begley (3200m run) in 94-95 to win back-to-back state titles. Bontrager’s two 1st place finishes allowed Westview to finish 8th in the team competition.

Bontrager wasn’t the only repeat state champion from Michiana. Warsaw senior Jordan Randall won the high jump for the 2nd straight year, tying his PR with a jump of 7 feet and 2 inches. The 5-7 Georgia bound jumper is the first Warsaw boy to ever repeat as a state champion in any event in Track and Field. Warsaw also placed 2nd in the Pole Vault as senior Tucker Reed shattered his PR and school record with a leap of 16 feet. Reed went 15-3 at regionals. The two results positioned Warsaw 11th in the team competition.

Mishawaka junior Leon Fowler got in the state championship party, winning the Long Jump with a leap of 24 feet, 6 inches. He’s the first Mishawaka long jump state champion since Franklin Kristi in 1936. He’s the 1st Cavemen boys track state champion in any event since Nicholas Banke won the Discus in 2009. Fowler is the 12th individual boys track champion in Cavemen history and just the 2nd since 1957.

Notre Dame bound thrower Westen Ott of Churubusco took home two state championships, winning the Discus with a toss of 191-10 and the Shot Put with a heave of 65-02. Concord’s Donovan Arnold placed 6th in the Discus at 175-09 and NorthWood’s Colson Yoder was 3rd in the Shot Put at 60-01.
