IUSB stuns Bethel in men’s basketball, 72-70

(Mishawaka) — It’s a seven-minute drive from IUSB to Bethel, but in basketball terms over the years, they’ve seemed much farther apart than that.

That is until Tuesday night at the Wiekamp Center.

IUSB delivered a thrilling finish Tuesday night, using a 9-0 run in the final two minutes to stun their crosstown rival , 72-70, on the road. The comeback victory marked the first win over the Pilots for longtime head coach Scott Cooper, ending a drought that reached back to 2010.

Trailing 69-63 with just over two minutes remaining, the Titans put together their most important stretch of the night. Chris Hurt scored an old-fashioned three-point play with a drive in the lane. The Titans defense started forcing turnovers.

With 40 seconds remaining, Hurt made a crucial steal, setting up AJ Dunn with a layup to tie the game at 69. After another defensive stop, Hurt stepped to the free-throw line and knocked down the go-ahead attempt with 11 seconds left, giving IUSB its first lead since the closing seconds of the opening half.

Bethel made its 17th and final turnover on the next possession, and CJ Hornbeak calmly buried two free throws to extend the lead to 72-69. The Pilots managed one final point at the line but could not connect on a last-second three-point attempt.

Hurt led IUSB (1-1) with 17, while Dunn added 13. Caedmon Bontrager topped Bethel (0-1) with 16 points.
