(Coral Gables, FL) — Miami wide receiver Malachi Toney, one of the leading contenders for the Heisman Trophy, will have surgery on a high ankle sprain and is expected to be sidelined at least four weeks, including Saturday’s game with Notre Dame.
Toney suffered the injury in practice Wednesday, according to a statement from the University of Miami.
The 5-foot-11, 188-pound sophomore is having a sensational season with 73 receptions for 1,027 yards and 13 touchdowns for the undefeated and top-ranked Hurricanes. He is responsible for 42 percent of Miami’s passing yardage this season.
The Hurricanes lead the nation, scoring 47.6 points per game this season with a passing attack led by Duke transfer quarterback Darian Mensah. Receivers Cooper Barkate and Daylyn Upshaw will have to step up in Toney’s absence.
Miami had already been listed as a 5.5-point underdog to the 11th-ranked Irish for Saturday night’s game at Notre Dame Stadium.
