Irish snap road skid, beat Virginia
(Charlottesville, Virginia) — Notre Dame men’s basketball was 0-9 all-time at Virginia. The key word there…was.
Micah Shrewsberry’s squad shot an amazing 12-of-23 from three-point range, as the Irish whipped the Cavaliers, 74-59, at John Paul Jones Arena. Notre Dame became just the third opponent to eclipse the 70-point mark in that facility in the last 66 games.
Penn High School alum Markus Burton led the way with 21 points, including a 4-of-6 performance from beyond the arc. Tae Davis added 16 points, six rebounds and five assists, while Braeden Shrewsberry tallied 13 points.
The win raises Notre Dame to 9-10 on the season and 3-5 in Atlantic Coast Conference play. Virginia drops to 9-11, 2-7.
Burton came out firing, scoring Notre Dame’s first nine points, as the Irish grabbed an early 14-3 lead. Isaac McKneely sparked Virginia on an 8-0 run, to close it to 14-11, but that’s as close as the Cavaliers would ever get in this one.
Matt Allocco and Davis quickly rebuilt the lead to 11 with 7:22 left in the first half and Notre Dame was never threatened after that.
Notre Dame will look to even its record on the season when it faces Georgia Tech Tuesday night at Purcell Pavilion.
