Freeman calls 8-1 Irish confident, but not satisfied
(Notre Dame) — With an 8-1 record and a seven-game win streak, Notre Dame’s football team has every reason to be confident.
“There’s a lot of confidence,” admitted head coach Marcus Freeman at his Monday press conference. “I’m confident. The team is confident. But with success comes complacency. That’s what keeps me up at night. I want them to enjoy success, but there’s a part of me that wants to be greedy. We have a lot of confidence, but there’s room for improvement”
Notre Dame is heading into the final quarter of the season ranked 10th in the College Football Playoff Rankings. But right now, Freeman says his team is focused on playing a 5-4 Virginia squad.
“This game is the Super Bowl,” said Freeman. “Whether we’re in the playoff hunt or not, that would be the case. They work 300 days a year for 12 guaranteed opportunities. To make a game mean less than another game, then you don’t love the game of football.”
Notre Dame will be without defensive tackle Howard Cross for Saturday’s game with Virginia. Cross is out with an ankle sprain he suffered in the win over the Seminoles. Punt returner Max Hurleman, running back Devyn Ford and defensive end Loghan Thomas are all listed as questionable with injuries.
As the game is the home finale, it will be full of emotion for the Irish seniors, who will run out of the tunnel for the final time.
“Senior Day is special,” noted Freeman. “Everybody’s emotions will be different, but we all have to make sure our emotions are under control before we kick it off. This is a special group of seniors. I’m grateful to be a part of this journey with them.”
Kickoff will be shortly after 3:30 EST. The game will be televised on NBC/Peacock.
