Shrewsberry signs top 5 Recruiting Class
In his 2nd season as the Notre Dame men’s basketball coach, Micah Shrewsberry has done something no one thought could happen at Notre Dame.
On Wednesday, he officially signed one of the top 5 recruiting classes in the country.
Tommy Ahneman, Ryder Frost, Jalen Haralson and Brady Koehler make up what Notre Dame is calling its best men’s basketball recruiting class of the modern era. The class is ranked 4th by 247Sports, 5th by ESPN, 5th by Rivals and 6th by ON3. It’s the 2nd best in the ACC and best in the state of Indiana.
Led by Haralson, all four players are top 100 recruits.
“When we as a staff began focusing on this class, we had a clear vision for what we wanted,” Shrewsberry said in a press release announcing the class. “We were looking to improve our skill level, size, and athleticism, and we were able to land four of our top priority recruits, in what can only be described as an elite recruiting class.”
Haralson is considered the highest rated prospect to sign with Notre Dame men’s basketball in the modern era. A 6-7 small forward from Fishers, Indiana who has been playing for La Lumiere in LaPorte, Haralson is considered one of the 15 best recruits in the country, a consensus 5-star prospect and the top player in Indiana.
“When I first got the job here, from a recruiting perspective, immediately Jalen was a top target for us,” Shrewsberry said. “Jalen was someone who we knew was an elite player and a great kid as well. His combination of size, athleticism, passing ability, and versatility have long made him one of the top players in his class nationally, and given him the ability to represent the country with USA Basketball. We couldn’t be more excited about what Jalen is going to bring to Notre Dame.”
Notre Dame says Haralson is already college ready, possesses top level athleticism, is as good of a passer as anyone his size in the class and a gifted scorer. He just Notre Dame over offers from Indiana, Purdue and Kansas.
Brady Koehler is a 4-star recruit and another Indiana product. The 6-9 power forward is currently a senior at Cathedral High School, the same high school Shrewsberry went to.
“Brady is someone who we think has legitimate NBA potential,” Shrewsberry said. “He is 6-foot-9 with over a 7-foot wingspan, and already has high-level athleticism along with an ability to handle the basketball and make shots. As he gets stronger, Brady is someone who we expect to thrive and really explode onto the scene.”
Koehler has grown nine inches during high school and has kept his guard skills according to the Irish. He’s become a talented defensive player, who can block shots and rebound and also has a very good 3-point shot. He choses the Irish over Wake Forest, Iowa and Butler.
Koehler isn’t the biggest player in the class, however. The Irish also signed the top prospect out of Minnesota, 6-10 center Tommy Ahneman.
“Finding true big men who can score with their back to the basket and also face the rim and make an impact is difficult, but that is exactly what Tommy can do,” Shrewsberry said. “Tommy is a center who has skill and should immediately provide a physical presence to this program and be someone who you can throw the ball to on the post and expect a bucket with his combination of a soft touch around the rim and excellent footwork.”
Ahneman, a 4-star recruit, chose Notre Dame over Minnesota, Nebraska, Iowa.
Ryder Frost is another top 100 player who is an elite 3-point shooter. He is a 6-6 small forward from Massachusetts.
“Immediately what stands out with Ryder is his ability to make shots,” Shrewsberry explains. “He is in my opinion the best outside shooter in the entire class. However, he can do more than just catch and shoot. Ryder also is a capable ball handler and an underrated athlete whose size and strength should give him positional versatility.”
Frost chose Notre Dame over Michigan, Iowa and Syracuse.
