(Notre Dame) — For the second day in a row, a member of the Notre Dame men’s basketball team has entered the transfer portal. This time, it’s one of the hometown guys.

Sports Michiana confirmed former St. Joseph star J.R. Konieczny intends to play elsewhere next season in his final year of eligibility. Konieczny will have his Notre Dame degree before moving elsewhere.

The 6-7 Konieczny set a St. Joe County scoring record (since broken) in high school with 1,996 career points, drawing the attention of then-Irish coach Mike Brey.  Konieczny couldn’t get on the floor with Brey though, playing in just seven games his freshman year before taking a redshirt season as sophomore.

Under Micah Shrewsberry, Konieczny appeared to have new life, playing in 32 games with 19 starts in the 2023-24 season. He scored a double-double off the bench against Auburn that year, and averaged 7.4 points anf ofur rebounds per game.

Last season, though, Konieczny’s playing time was wildly inconsistent. He still played in 32 games, starting only four, and his shooting declined as well, as he connected on only 29% from three point range. He wrapped up the year averaging just 4.3 points and 2.8 rebounds per contest.

Konieczny joins Warren Central’s Tae Davis as two Hoosier-state products who are transferring this spring.
