Clay and Purdue star Jaraan Cornell dies
(South Bend) — Jaraan Cornell, whose game-tying three-pointer in the Indiana high school state championship game propelled South Bend Clay to the 1994 state championship, has died at the age of 48.
The South Bend Tribune’s Austin Hough reports that Cornell’s body was found in his apartment Friday morning. No cause of death has been reported.
As a 16-year-old sophomore, Cornell became a legend when he coolly sank a three-pointer from the top of the key to force overtime in the 1994 state championship game, capping a massive Clay comeback. The Colonials would go on to defeat Valparaiso in overtime, 93-88, capturing South Bend’s last public school boys basketball championship.
Cornell went on to become Clay’s all-time leading scorer, tallying 1700 points during his brilliant prep career. He matriculated to Purdue, playing for Gene Keady, scoring 1595 career points and averaging in double figures all four seasons. He was named to the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame Silver Anniversary team in 2021.
Cornell returned to South Bend, and served as a girls basketball coach at his alma mater from 2013-15.
