Softball regional pairings set after busy Saturday
Two Indiana softball teams and five more from Southwest Michigan came away with trophies Saturday and advanced to regional play in their postseason state tournaments.
Penn won its 12th consecutive sectional championship with a 12-0 shellacking of LaPorte. Caitlyn Denny and Trinity Culp combined on a one-hitter pitching, while Easton Masten and Kaiya Garringer each drove in three runs. The Lady Kingsmen visits NIC rival Elkhart in the regional Tuesday night.
South Central scored 11 in the first inning, crushing Triton, 15-3, to win a 1A sectional. Caitlin Allen’s three RBI paced the Satellites, who travel to Fremont for the regional Tuesday.
In Michigan, it was district Saturday. In Division 2, Dowagiac’s Bree Campbell fanned 12 in a two-hit shutout, as the Chieftains blanked Three Rivers in the title game, 5-0.
Meanwhile, top-ranked Lakeshore used a one-hitter from Ashley Ramirez to beat South Haven, 9-0, for its district crown. Denny Dock’s 31-4 Lancers will face #3 Paw Paw in the regional Saturday at Harper Creek.
In Division 3, Buchanan and Coloma advanced to the Centreville regional. Tala Carlin stroked three hits as Buchanan topped Brandywine, 7-4. Rachel Carlson’s Bucks meet Bronson next Saturday. Coloma pounded Watervliet, 11-2, for a district crown and meets Kalamazoo Christian next Saturday.
In Division 4, Riley Paveza and Jadyn Payne both drove in four as Bridgman outslugged Decatur, 17-7. The Bees buzz into next Saturday’s regional against the host school Mendon.
