It’s been the most talked about game of the offseason.

Concord unveiling their new stadium.

Elkhart reminding its seniors they’ve never defeated Concord.

The storylines were plentiful.

And then when 7pm rolled around on Friday, August 21st, Elkhart and Concord put on an instant classic that will be remembered in Elkhart County for a long time.

Micah Jarrell threw for 163 yards and three touchdowns as Elkhart outlasted a late 4th quarter rally to defeat Concord 22-20 in front of a packed house at Concord’s newly renovated Jake Field. Jarrell was our Tony Letcher Student Athlete of the Week, our R. Yoder Construction Player of the Game and our threw a massive 4th quarter touchdown that proved to be the Big C Lumber Big Play of the Game.

The difference in this one was unconventional: a safety. After tackling the Minutemen in the end zone for the game’s first two points, Elkhart jumped out to a 15-0 lead. Concord scored late in the 2nd quarter to pull within 15-6 and then scored again in the 3rd to get within two.

Elkhart went back up 9 but with 5 minutes left in the game, Concord scored a massive touchdown that pulled them back within two again. Elkhart was able to drain the clock to under three minutes when they fumbled the ball on 3rd down and Concord took over in Elkhart territory. The game came down to a Concord field goal attempt but it was wide right and the Lions prevailed.

The Elkhart-Concord rivalry is now tied at three. Five of the six games have been decided by 10 points or less with the last four games decided by a total of 19 points.
