For only the fourth time in history, both Chicago baseball teams have qualified for the postseason…and they did it within five minutes of each other.

The White Sox took another step in their incredible story, clinching a postseason berth with a 9-1 thumping of Kansas City in Kauffman Stadium. Kyle Teel homered as the Sox won their 82nd game of the season, guaranteeing a winning season.

It’s a remarkable turnaround for a franchise that lost over 100 games in three consecutive seasons from 2023-2025.  The White Sox make the postseason for the first time since winning the AL Central in 2021. While they have clinched at least the last wild card spot, the Sox still trail Cleveland by a game in the AL Central.

Just minutes after the Sox began their celebration in Kansas City, the Cubs clinched one of the National League wild cards with a 2-1 triumph over Miami at Wrigley Field. Nico Hoerner singled home Ian Happ with the go-ahead run in the 6th and a tired Cubs bullpen supported winning pitcher Matthew Boyd.

There was another slice of history in the Cubs win, as center fielder Pete Crow-Armstrong became just the 7th player in the big leagues to put together a season with at least 40 homers and 40 stolen bases. Armstong swiped his 40th base after a walk in the first inning, eliciting a thunderous ovation from the Wrigley Field faithful.

The Cubs now stand at 88-71, a half-game behind San Diego for the top wild card spot. The Padres play the Dodgers late Thursday night.

The only other times both Chicago baseball teams made the postseason in the same year were 1906, 2008 and 2020.
