Irish women’s basketball loses second in a row
(Cayman Islands) — Most people enjoy trips to the Cayman Islands, but the Notre Dame women’s basketball teamwon’t have fond memories of its holiday there.
Niele Ivey’s squad dropped its second straight game here, as the third-ranked Irish were knocked off by Utah, 78-67.
Notre Dame used a strong first half from Sonia Citron to build a 37-32 halftime lead. The Irish then missed their first nine shots to begin the third quarter, and the Utes took advantage with an 11-0 run to take the lead. Utah then started the fourth quarter with an 8-2 run, building a double-digit lead and never looked back.
Citron led Notre Dame (5-2) with a season-high 22 points, while Hannah Hidalgo and Liatu King added 16 each. The Irish were thwarted by committing 22 turnovers.
Utah is now 6-2, using four players in double figures. Gianna Kneepkens topped the Utes with 16.
Notre Dame returns to Purcell Pavilion Thursday night to face #5 Texas.
